Faculty of Art

The Faculty of Art provides an experiential arts education that joins practice to theory and studio production to interdisciplinary inquiry. Our goal is to provide students with an innovative and stimulating environment in which to develop their own ideas and artworks as ethical and responsive participants in a culture of varying social needs and opportunities.

Championing a plurality of approaches and cross-cultural perspectives in art making, our students are exposed to a breadth of contextual knowledge and the discipline specific rigors of a studio art practice. Teaching methodologies emphasize problem solving, active experimentation, imaginative production, critical commentary and research that may be applied or speculative.

We support innovative and critical pedagogy and commit to faculty development in teaching, research and artistic production. Students study with leading practitioners who advocate for the role of art in society as a means for human and social development. Committed to critical thinking and the creative exploration of visual art and culture, it is our mission to graduate students who will distinguish themselves as exemplary contemporary artists, curators, critics and educators.

Faculty of Art students study in both studio and seminar environments. A spirit of dialogue and debate is fostered in the classroom and reinforced through critiques, lectures and panel discussions by leading contemporary artists, curators and critics. The program of study also includes Liberal Studies courses which broaden the students’ perspective of their chosen disciplines as well as significant historical, cultural and societal issues.
