DPXA is structured to provide students with a versatile yet rigorous technical and critical toolset. In the first and second years of study, students undergo thorough studio arts training coupled with hands-on experience in a variety of art and animation techniques, both traditional and digital: observational drawing, traditional and digital painting, stop-motion, 3D animation and digital compositing, to name a few. An increased content of Liberal Arts and Sciences courses provide a cultural and historical context for these practices, grounding students’ projects in solid critical skills. The third and fourth years are geared towards shaping these newly acquired skills into a cross-disciplinary creative language, culminating in a final capstone project such as an installation-based animation work, a digital painting series or an interactive virtual work that combines both digital painting and animation. Graduates of the Digital Painting and Expanded Animation Area of Specialization will be equipped with portable, professional digital art and animation skills coupled with the critical thinking and experimental approach required of contemporary art practitioners.
Liberal studies courses are listed under the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Sciences and designated course type LST in the course schedule.
See the Liberal Art & Sciences for an outline of the degree liberal studies requirements.
