The Curriculum
OCAD provides a studio-based education through a curriculum that has more breadth and depth than any other fine arts program in Canada. Students entering the university follow a common first-year program in either the Faculty of Art or the Faculty of Design. First year provides students with a basic grounding in principles and fundamentals and the opportunity to begin specializing in a chosen field of study. The upper-year curriculum is designed to help students progressively develop a depth of expertise in a specific area of professional studio practice, while gaining exposure to a breadth of disciplines and knowledge of the field of visual culture.
A thought-provoking curriculum offered by the Faculty of Liberal Studies explores history and theory in a range of subject areas including critical theory and history in Visual Culture, English, Humanities, Social Sciences and Science, and is fully integrated with the studio program. Students acquire critical thinking and writing skills, and the analytical skills to execute powerful ideas within the studio context.
Degree Opportunities for Students of the Diploma Program
In the past, the Ontario College of Art & Design also offered four year undergraduate programs leading to the Associate of the Ontario College of Art & Design diploma (AOCA/AOCAD diploma). Diploma students can apply to transfer from their diploma program to the degree programs. To transfer to the degree programs, students must have completed at least 5.0 credits, have an overall evaluation average of 65%, and be either currently registered in the Faculty of Art or Faculty of Design.
Please refer to Degree/Diploma Requirements in the Faculty of Liberal Studies section for information on the credit requirements and course options for current students transferring to the degree program.
Degree Opportunities for OCAD Alumni
To meet the strong interest from the alumni community, OCAD has developed a program in which graduates can convert their AOCA/AOCAD diploma to a degree by completing additional credits in the Faculty of Liberal Studies. Alumni can apply to enter a Degree Completion program for either a BFA or BDes, depending on which program they initially graduated from at OCAD. The Degree Completion program provides a broad liberal education through courses offered by the Faculty of Liberal Studies.
Please refer to Degree/Diploma Requirements in the Faculty of Liberal Studies section for information on the credit requirements and course options for graduates returning for the degree completion program.
