| (NOT OFFERED IN 2009-2010) This course traces ways that the concept of “risk” has been used in a variety of competing social philosophies to illustrate the interconnectedness of individuals, social life, economic advancement, and the environment. We begin by considering how different understandings of risk inform contemporary social scientific approaches to understanding the future development of human and natural resources. We continue with an examination of a range of social responses to risk in order to understand the role of “risk perception” in visions about our common future. |
