| (NOT OFFERED IN FALL/WINTER 2011-12) This course explores the cultural production of Asia and Oceania to consider the impact of colonialism and globalization on local art forms, and how they are invested with meanings through cross-cultural exchange and consumption. Students develop an understanding of how meanings in traditional art have been reinterpreted and transformed through the dynamics of colonial encounters and global consumption. Field trips and a case-study approach provides students with the analytical tools necessary to understand how social, economic and political forces construct and transform cultural categories and issues such as gender, museums and representation, authenticity, tourism, cultural appropriation and the "primitive". |
