COURSE DESCRIPTION

GDES 3B73
Critical Design Studio
0.50 Credit(s)
Studio
Prerequisite: 9.0 credits, including all first-year requirements (5.0 credits)
How is theory turned into practice? Through a critical mode of design practice students will learn how to develop theoretical considerations through studio practice. Critical issues in technology, market forces, culture and the environment are directly engaged in this course through a variety of methods that do not prescribe designed solutions but, through design, ask better questions. The rich tradition of critical approaches to “making” in design is used as the historical context for this course’s focus on what contemporary design can do to address these “wicked problems”. This course will also help students develop the necessary skills for successful thesis projects.
Notes: NOT OFFERED IN FALL/WINTER 2012/13
