This course provides an overview of the diverse practices and contexts of Latin American art from the 1960s to the present. The contributions of Latin American artists to conceptualism, abstraction, neo-figuration, installation, photography, social praxis, and new media are examined, with a focus on major movements in Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, and post-revolutionary Cuba as well as the Latino/a artistic movement in the United States and Canada. How Latin American artists address issues of socially engaged art, hybridity, border arts, cultural identity, and state violence are analysed through both art works and critical texts.
