In the Material Art & Design program we explore the connection between the hand, eye and mind as experienced in the making and using of functional and non-functional craft objects. This hands-on and theoretical study of materials focuses on the potential of objects to perform functions, express culture and act as metaphors essential to add meaning to daily life.
Students in the program select a major specialization in Fibre or Jewellery/Metalsmithing and may take electives or a minor in Ceramics. Each area delivers a traditional and contemporary studio-based education with a focus on the development of expertise in: making and using materials; understanding the context in which to situate the work; the development of critical thinking, ethics and responsibility; as well as the ability to incorporate hand techniques with new technologies.
The curriculum taught in the program has been developed to meet the needs of craft practitioners in the art and design fields who are directed towards diverse paths which include: small batch production; one-of-a-kind and custom functional and wearable object making; gallery exhibiting; critical design; designing for interiors and industry; and graduate studies. Students may choose to graduate with either a BDes or a BFA.
Jewellery/Metalsmithing
This program encourages students to look at jewellery and metalsmithing in critical, new or non‑traditional ways, while respecting the materials and skills associated with traditional fine jewellery and object making. The full range of courses offered cover fabrication methods, gem setting, silversmithing, concept development, production techniques and rapid prototyping.
Fibre
This program encourages students to investigate fibre materials and processes using both an art-based and applied-design approach. Two main areas of study, constructed textiles (weaving) and surface design (printing and dyeing), are complemented with courses in concept development and non-woven processes such as felting, papermaking and embellishment techniques. Students use traditional techniques and computer-aided design to develop innovative functional products and non-functional artwork.
Ceramics
The Ceramics studio offers a range of courses that explore inventive ways of making ceramics for domestic, industrial and architectural settings. Through the study of the physical and chemical properties of clay, glazes, mouldmaking and surface manipulation, students create functional or sculptural ceramic objects.

All Faculty of Design programs are developed as semester groupings of related courses. In order to be prepared to meet course expectations, students are normally required to complete all core courses in one semester before carrying on to courses in the next semester.
First-year students will select their area of specialization in Material Art & Design when registering for their first-year winter studio courses. Second-year students will select their area of specialization in Material Art & Design when registering for their second-year winter studio courses. Please note that places in these courses are limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Students must achieve a minimum grade of 60% in at least one of their core studio courses each semester (tagged with “†”) to advance to the following semester’s core studio.
A minimum overall average of 65% must be achieved at the end of fourth year in all designated courses (tagged with “∆”) of the student’s major/program.
