A minor in Material Art & Design is intended to provide access to concepts, skills, materials and processes to students outside the Material Art & Design program. First-year requirements need to have been completed prior to starting this course of study. The initial two courses provide a grounding in the specific mediums: jewellery, fibre or ceramics. They are also the most common prerequisites for additional courses in those mediums. This minor is also intended to be non-prescriptive, in that students may take complementary courses in other mediums as long as they have the appropriate pre and/or co requisites. Students are strongly advised to check the course descriptions for courses which require pre and/or co requisites. These courses are designated with a (▲) in the following program listing.

Craft Curator-Criticism & Curatorial Practice major, Material Art & Design minor (craft history focus)
An interest in craft history, cultural issues and a basic understanding of technique over a broad range of craft practices will be the motive forces for this Material Art & Design minor. Craft theory and critical writing as it relates to contemporary craft practice can be integrated into a developing curatorial training. An understanding of tradition materials, methods and cultural context will enhance a student's major course of study.

Craft Entrepreneur-Industrial Design major, Material Art & Design minor (Jewellery focus)
Taking a jewellery design from inception to market through small batch production is the intent of this Material Art & Design minor. Design techniques such as 3D modelling and rapid prototyping will lead to industry accepted production processes, such as mould making and lost wax casting. The exploration of alternative materials and integration of contemporary assistive and communication technologies will place the craft entrepreneur at the leading edge of jewellery design.

Public Artist-Sculpture/Installation major, Material Art & Design minor (ceramic focus)
Understanding the material properties of clay and time-tested processes involved in ceramic creation will enable a Sculpture/Installation major the ability to manifest sculptural concepts in a material with both historical significance and contemporary cachet. The application of figurative modelling skills will prepare students for commission-based work. Architecturally focused courses will provide them an entrance to public art projects. The addition of this material and process vocabulary will also augment approaches to installation based work.

Guerrilla Couture-Integrated Media major, Material Art & Design minor (fibre focus)
Whether in the sculptural, performative or fashion arenas, the Integrated Media major is equipped to combine textile techniques with technology. Exposure to responsive materials, fibre processes and technologies, such as the Arduino “Lilypad” wearable microprocessor will enable the development of “smart garments”. The joining of sculptural costume and performance can result in new approaches to narrative expression.
