The history of textiles parallels significant events and social changes in the 19th to 21st centuries. This course will survey and define the histories of art textiles, fashion and functional textiles through slide lectures and research studio assignments. Process, materials and terminology will be introduced within the context of each category of work. Class discussion will address the traditional role of textiles in Western culture and how that has been questioned and changed in the 20th and 21st centuries. |

Conditions: Students must achieve a minimum grade of 60% in at least one of their core studio courses each semester to advance to further Material Art & Design studio courses. |
