This course will examine how scientific developments during different periods in Western history have influenced explanations of health and disease, the body, and the human condition. We will explore the emergence of different medical belief systems and the impact of scientific theories on societal beliefs and values. Topics covered will include perceptions of disease causation, evolution and Social Darwinism, different explanations of madness and disease, and current issues defining medicine in the 21st century. We will also address how major diseases and epidemics have affected historical outcomes.
