This course examines the role of the classical tradition in Western design and culture from the Renaissance to the present. Considering classicism as a structure open to interpretation and innovation rather than as a fixed tradition, we will critically examine the legacy of classical forms and ideas on the past five centuries of cultural and artistic development. Our primary focus will be on architecture and graphic design, but we will also consider the impact of classicism on modern philosophy, literature, and the fine arts. Our study of visual works will be supported by the reading of primary and secondary texts. |
