Art of Europe: Greek to Gothic (NOT OFFERED IN FALL/WINTER 2012-13)

Prerequisite: 3.0 credits of first-year studio and 1.0 credit of first-year liberal arts & sciences (including the Writing course with a minimum passing grade of 60%).
This lecture course provides an historical overview of European art from the classical ideals of the Greek and Romans to the religious art of the Gothic cathedrals that have influenced the development of Modern European art and architecture. Beginning with the Acropolis, we examine the ideas and forms of Western Classicism that were revived during the Italian Renaissance, and the reactions to Classicism in subsequent historical periods, including the early Christian, Byzantine, Romanesque and Gothic artistic movements.
Anti-requisite: Students who have taken VISC 2B33 may not take this course for further credit.
