COURSE DESCRIPTION

INDS 3B32
Connections/Case Studies
0.50 Credit(s)
Studio/Seminar
Prerequisite: INDS 2B19 ID Studio 3: Emerging Technologies
or INDS 3B27 ID Studio 3: Emerging Technologies
and 8.0 credits, including all first-year requirements (5.0 credits)
The student will be required to identify and connect with a practicing designer who they feel best represents their position in the design world that they would like to eventually fill. They will define a project or case study that they will then undertake with the mentorship of the chosen designer. This is not an internship: the student will undertake their own work, with informed oversight, provided both by the instructor and by the designer that they have chosen to shadow (their mentor). It is the intention and expectation that this external activity will provide the student with some understanding of the way in which design actually works or might work (examples beyond the obvious are: critical design, design-makers, design artist, design as authorship, "hacking", generative design etc.) and will recontextualize their student experience in a constructive way, leading up to and preparing them for their final fourth year project.
Conditions: Contracts must be established between students and mentors
