| (NOT OFFERED IN 2008-2009) The course aims to cover questions such as: How do literary and cultural theorists approach literary texts? How are contemporary views of literature influenced by diverse theoretical approaches to the study of literature, in fields such as formalism, structuralism, poststructuralism, psychoanalysis, Marxism, feminism, postmodernism, and critical race studies. We will investigate the relation of literature to criticism, and the construction of a literary cannon, as we study a wide range of literary genres and theoretical approaches to literature. By examining contemporary readings of literary texts alongside prior interpretations, we will investigate how these texts are open to multiple interpretations. Our focus will be (1) critically analyzing literary theory; (2) writing essays in which you use specific theoretical approaches to analyze literary classics. Literary texts may include works by Blake, Dickinson, Milton, Shakespeare, Sophocles, Woolf and others. |
