Animation: Origins & Techniques

Prerequisite: 3.0 credits of first-year studio and 1.0 credit of first-year liberal studies, (must include one of the Essay and the Argument courses with a passing grade of 60%: ENGL 1B04 or ENGL 1B05, formerly LBST 1B11, LBST 1B12 or LBST 1B13).
This course combines a historical and contemporary survey of animation
as an art form, a technological practice, and an object of theoretical investigation. Students investigate the history of animation through a sequence of studio projects, short written assignments and seminars. Techniques covered include: cameraless animation (zoetropes,
phenakistoscopes, etc.), pixilation, frame-by-frame with digital SLRs, stop-motion, rotoscoping, character design, sound sync and compositing basics.
Notes: Priority in registration is given to Digital Painting and Expanded Animation (DPXA): Integrated Media and Digital Painting and Expanded Animation (DPXA): Drawing & Painting Specialization students.

This course triggers Laptop Program fees for the Integrated Media and Digital Painting & Expanded Animation Laptop Program.
Conditions: APPLICABLE TO SECTIONS OFFERED AS CORE FOCUS ELECTIVES ONLY: Students must have completed a minimum of 1.0 credit of First-year studio curriculum.
