Academic Course
Prerequisite: 3.0 credits of first-year studio and 1.0 credit of first-year liberal studies, including the first year writing course with a minimum passing grade of 60%, and an overall average of 60%.
The course will provide an interdisciplinary introduction to the inclusive design of information and communication technologies and practices, where inclusive design is defined as design that is inclusive of the full range of human diversity with respect to ability, language, culture, gender, age and other forms of human difference. The course will cover the theoretical background, critical analysis, underpinning social and economic motivations, design methods employed, controversies, as well as the major challenges or problems to be addressed. Students will engage in both a review and analysis of relevant research and the current state of the field combined with more experiential problem solving and the application of inclusive design theory and methods introduced during the course. The course will equip students to engage in well informed, in-depth critical analysis of inclusive design of information systems and services and to apply rudimentary inclusive design methods.
