(NOT OFFERED IN 2008-2009) This lecture course offers a semiotic approach to the "reading" of images in art, whereby images are understood to be symbolic systems or codes that are open to interpretation. Students examine a wide variety of representations from fine art and popular culture in order to understand how the meaning of images can be as stable, and as fluctuating, as the meaning of words and language. In the context of this semiotic approach, students are encouraged to understand how ambiguity functions in the interpretation of art. |
