| Corequisite: Students are required to select one ID Studio 1 Lab working in either metal, plastics or wood. (3hrs per week) Mandatory laptop workshop (2 hrs per week) |

| This introductory course familiarizes students with the knowledge base and skills needed for the effective creation of human artifacts. With an emphasis on concept development in the design of everyday objects, students are encouraged to create new product typologies in the context of human needs. They will explore the complex issues involved in contemporary industrial design and the changing nature of the processes used for meeting particular human or social needs, as well as specific functional or market requirements. The course introduces students to semantic and symbolic aspects of industrial design through developmental studies that express the functional and cultural meanings of products. Students will use various methods of conceptual sketching, detailed documentation and prototyping. The goal is to translate knowledge into understanding the design criteria used during the concept stages of product development.
