COURSE DESCRIPTION

DIGF 5B01
IP: Getting Value from Your Creativity
0.50 Credit(s)
Academic Course
Prerequisite: 3.0 credits of first-year studio and 1.0 credit of first-year liberal arts & sciences (including the Writing course with a minimum passing grade of 60%).
The digital age has unleashed new moneymaking creative opportunities, but the internet has also resulted in the destruction of intellectual property (IP) models that have existed since Italy’s Venetian Statute of 1474. The course examines how individuals, groups or businesses can protect their creative capital without losing the ability to network, share and collaborate. Using case studies, visits to industry and the students’ innovations, the course looks at how digital technology has upset the balance between content creators and content users and how business models of the past are being replaced with open source formats such as creative commons.
Notes: Course level change 2014-15.

This course is open to graduate students and fourth (4th) undergraduate students.
