(NOT OFFERED IN 2008-2009) This lecture-seminar course provides students with perspectives on the impact of early European contact with Africa on the art and culture of the African diaspora. Students study the historical, political, cultural and social contexts of the colonial period and post-colonial history of the African diaspora since the 1500s and consider how the historical and contemporary work of Caribbean, British, American and Canadian artists of African ancestry have responded to both colonial legacies and current contemporary issues. |
