Taronton, Onitariio, Kanata examines the socio-economic and political history of Toronto as a traditional territory of Indigenous peoples, from its pre-colonial roots as an Aboriginal trading centre, through the waves of dislocation, relocation and migration of Aboriginal people to and from the city from the 19th century to the present. The course investigates the growth and diversity of Toronto's Aboriginal population, including its disproportionate representation among the homeless and its substantial membership in the middle class. Students explore the ways in which contemporary urban Indigenous populations engage with the city and the extent to which their actions redefine and enrich what it means to be Aboriginal in Toronto. |
