This lecture course presents a concentrated study of the Dada and Surrealist movements, which represent the antithesis of Cubism and other formalist developments in early-20th-century art and aesthetics. The course examines the spirit of Dada on both sides of the Atlantic through the work of artists such as Duchamp, Hoch, Schwitters, DalĂ, Miro and Magritte; precursors of the Surrealists such as Rousseau and de Chirico; and the legacy of Surrealism and Breton and his circle. |
