INDS 3B09
Research Methodologies for Industrial Designers

Prerequisite: 8.5 credits, including all first-year requirements (5.0 credits)
This course introduces the students to design research and design direction methodologies. They will review the prescribed project areas and map the applicable human, social, sustainable, technical and cultural influences. Topics will then be selected to identify potential opportunities for innovation based on knowledge gained through scenario building, qualitative and quantitative research. They will be defined based on a detailed analysis and study of a design problem/opportunity. Special care will be taken to obtain an understanding of Research Ethics Board compliance through completion of the McMaster Research Ethics Online Tutorial.
Anti-requisite: Students who have taken INDS 3B09 Thesis Preparation & Research may not take this course for further credit.
Notes: Students unable to complete this course, prior to fourth year, due to absence on Mobility in the winter semester or because they were unable to attain a passing grade, may take GDES 3B68 Design (As) Research (with prior permission from their Program Chair through their Program Assistant), as a replacement for this course. See GDES 3B68 course description for details.
Conditions: INDS 3B09 requires a minimum pass grade of 60%.
