Material Explorations for Designers
0.50 Credit(s)
Studio/Seminar
Prerequisite: 9.0 credits, including all first-year requirements (5.0 credits)
Material Explorations for Designers will explore the fundamentals of structure, energetics and bonding that underpin materials science. Students will be introduced to the composition, manufacture and application of a number of materials both natural and engineered. The "new materials" of engineered composites, nanomaterials and biomaterials will be studied for their appropriateness in design applications and environments. Life cycle analysis, decomposition, re-purposing and sustainable manufacturing will be discussed. Students will work with the resources of the Materials Library and Lab to support their research around existing materials and to write performance specifications for yet to be realized new materials and applications. The course will include lectures, conference calls with material science and industry resources, case studies and a final applications project.
Notes: NOT OFFERED IN FALL/WINTER 2012/13
