(NOT OFFERED IN 2008-2009) This lecture-seminar course offers an overview of modern art in Mexico to provide students with an opportunity to extend their understanding of Mexico's visual culture, both past and present. Beginning with Frida Kahlo, who is now an international icon of Mexican culture, we then survey the public art projects of the great muralists, including Rivera, Orozco and Siqueiros. We also study the work of Abraham Angel, Dr. Atl, Posada, MarĂa Izquierdo and Velasco, as well as a number of contemporary artists - Elizondo, Soriano, and Toledo among them. |
