This course will introduce students to the field of cultural geography by investigating concepts of the land and landscapes as frameworks for both the natural and built environment. Through lectures and readings the course will examine how humans have transformed and manipulated space over time, while simultaneously developing cultures that encompass a range of ideas and attitudes towards landscape, place, identity, narrative and community. Global in scope, and situated in a humanistic perspective, the course will apply traditional and alternative critical frameworks and methodologies to case studies set in Toronto and in Canada as a focus. |
