Not Offered 2014/15 This course offers students an introduction to the philosophy of art through the study of concepts and issues which have concerned artists, critics and philosophers from modernism to postmodernism. We examine some of the traditional philosophical problems of aesthetics connected to ideas of beauty, genius, imagination, creativity, artistic value and expression, critical evaluation, and the role of the artist in society. We also investigate contemporary issues related to the dematerialization of the art object in the twentieth century such as visual thinking, spatial intelligence, representation, semiotic signification, the anti-aesthetic, and the connection between art and politics. |
