| Not offered in 2013/2014 The synthesis of imagination and practice can manifest the most remarkable creations: the songs of birds are streamed, toys teach literacy, developments in the entertainment field animate medical diagnosis. Such innovations are branded the “intellectual property” of the creator. How can that be? IP laws have been created to protect artists, inventors, designers, and even the public from confusing one source with another. In this course we’ll explore how and why that happens through an examination of the recent history and legislation of IP, including the rights of creators and users, how ideas are developed and protected, and brand management. The course will differentiate among trademarks, copyright, moral rights, industrial designs, trade secrets and patents in the Canadian and Global context. |
