Printmaking as an artistic process pre-dates Gutenberg’s printing press, print-related practices and concerns have evolved greatly since their inception. OCAD students will draw from the history of the medium, while expanding and exploring hybridized printmaking techniques involving photo, digital and installation techniques. Since printed matter is so pervasive and can be found everywhere from magazines and billboards to clothing and ceramics, printmaking has a unique and challenging relationship to the world of contemporary art.
As a foundation for their artistic practice, students are introduced to seven primary print processes: etching, lithography, relief, screenprinting, papermaking, book arts and digital printmaking processes. Students are encouraged to create work using digital and photographic technologies within the traditional print media and to explore cross-disciplinary possibilities. As an extension of process-related concerns of authenticity, multiplicity and seriality, all of which are tied directly to the history of Printmaking, students will learn about and engage in the production of artist multiples, book works and print based installations.
Throughout their studies, Printmaking students augment their level of technical skill and develop an awareness of health and safety issues. Students are encouraged to apply themselves creatively and conceptually while pushing the boundaries of print media. Liberal Studies courses complement studio practice by providing an awareness of issues and concerns relevant to contemporary artists today, and offering the perspective of a wider social, political and cultural context.
Students majoring in Printmaking are required to complete a Studio Thesis project in their final year. Open studio time should be used to continue and complete studio work. Refer to the calendar course descriptions for further details on the courses offered in the Printmaking area. Printmaking students are also encouraged to register for Fabrication Studios courses.
Students from other programs in the Faculty of Art and the Faculty of Design are welcome to complement their studies with print elective courses or a minor in Printmaking.
Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree students must complete the requirements listed below for their program, including 5.0 liberal studies credits.
Associate of the Ontario College of Art & Design (AOCAD) diploma students must complete the requirements listed below for their program, including 4.0 Liberal Studies credits. Diploma students admitted to OCAD 2002 fall/winter or earlier, may replace up to 1.5 of the 4.0 required Liberal Studies with studio/seminars.

Eligibility to Graduate
Please note that students are eligible to graduate if they:
•Have fulfilled all program requirements.
•Are in good academic standing. (Students who attempt 2.0 credits or more in an academic year and earn an average of 60% or higher in those credits are in satisfactory academic standing.)
•Have on overall average of 60% or higher.
•Have an average of at least 65% in the designated courses of their major/program. (Faculty of Design only).
•Have no outstanding accounts at the university.
All Liberal Studies courses are available to students and a wide range of study is encouraged. Printmaking students who are seeking Liberal Studies courses to deepen their disciplinary knowledge may be interested in the following courses:

***An elective may be any course offered by the Faculty of Art. You may also take an elective in your program Major area as well as in Material Art & Design (maximum 0.5 credit per year level for a total of 1.5 credits). Students declaring a Liberal Studies minor are strongly urged to complete the full complement of studio courses for their major, including all studio electives.
